Luis Díaz left Liverpool in the summer to try his luck at Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old scored 17 goals and added eight assists for the Reds last season.
The German champions paid just over £60m for the Colombia. Díaz has already started to repay that faith with four goals and three assists so far.
That’s an impressively quick adaptation for the attacker and he’s now been speaking to Bild about settling in. The German newspaper explain Díaz has played a big role in Bayern Munich’s impressive start to the current season.
Vincent Kompany’s side have won all five of their Bundesliga matches so far. In that process they’ve scored 22 goals and conceded just three. That means a wildly impressive goal difference of +19 after fives matches.
To put that into context, the best goal difference in the Premier League after six matches is Arsenal on +9.
Asked about his great start since arriving from Liverpool, Díaz said: “The team makes it very easy for me on the pitch. We have a lot of great players, especially up front, who don’t just think about scoring goals themselves, but also help their teammates. That gives me a lot of security and confidence. It’s incredible to play attacking games with them. They have so much quality! I’m really very, very happy and I’m feeling better and more comfortable all the time.”
Inevitably asked about playing with Harry Kane, he said: “From my time at Liverpool and when he was still at Tottenham, I knew he scored a lot of goals. But when I first trained with him, I thought, ‘This guy is brutal!’ He does everything, scores goals, shapes the game, and even defends. He totally surprised me. I’m very happy to be able to play alongside him now.”
“I want to win every competition”
During his time at Liverpool, Díaz was mildly criticised for his failure to master English. Now in Germany, Bild point out he isn’t learning the local language but rather still trying to get to grips with English. That is seen as a quicker route to communicating with teammates.
“Not many people in our team speak Spanish, but Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich can and have been very supportive. I’m currently concentrating more on perfecting my English so I can communicate even better as quickly as possible.”
On his integration generally, the South American wanted to praise those around him: “The whole team is helping me. The dressing room is cohesive, pleasantly calm, and down-to-earth. It’s very family-like. That, and the trust the coach immediately gave me, were very important for my great start here in Munich.”
Having won an impressive 15 trophies in his career so far, Díaz has big aims. He’s won the league and multiple cups at every club he’s been at, and the Champions League with Liverpool.
With Bayern Munich, Díaz wants to win the lot: “I will give my all to score a lot of goals and assists. How many I get is in God’s hands. But above all, I want to win every competition with the team.”
