Last week, we covered claims from Brazil which said Fulham and West Ham United were both interested in Corinthians goalkeeper Carlos Miguel.

Our story pointed out how strange that rumour was, because the 25-year-old had been spending most of his time on the bench, while club legend Cássio continued having a starting spot, despite making many mistakes. The rumours could be a way to put some pressure on the club to let him play, otherwise he could leave. And it was known the fans would be on his side.

Well, things went exactly as we expected. Cássio was benched, Carlos Miguel started in their last two games, and the rumours about Fulham and West Ham are now gone. Following last night’s match, the goalkeeper spoke to the local media, and in quotes brought by ESPN Brasil, he tried to dismiss the chances of a transfer.

“About leaving, having offers to leave, it’s a lot about the heart, because I chose to be here. I could have gone to other clubs when I first arrived. I didn’t come because of the money, I came because I knew what it was like here, the work I’d have to do here.

“I knew the guy I’d have with me, which is Cássio. And I’ve been able to develop my football a lot more. I’m happy to be here today and fulfil everything I dreamed of. I’d rather keep going. Nothing in life is easy, sometimes we have certain barriers and we have to overcome them by facing up to them.”

It’s hard to completely rule out the English interest in Carlos Miguel, as he’s a fine goalkeeper, but it’s just difficult to imagine Fulham and West Ham investing in a 25-year-old who has spent most of his career on the bench.
