Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand has taken a small swipe at Tottenham and manager Ange Postecoglou, insisting he can’t understand their stance on Pierre Emile Højbjerg.
Ekstra Bladet cover comments from the Danish boss today and how Højbjerg is set to be a key player for the country at Euro 2024 this summer.
They explain that if Denmark are to be successful then they require the Tottenham midfielder to be in top form.
Whether he will be, though, is up for debate as he’s not been key for Spurs under Postecoglou this season.
That means on one hand he will not be arriving with ‘an empty tank’ but it also means he will join up with his nation somewhat undercooked after bouncing between the bench and starting 11 for Tottenham this season.
The clear signs from Postecoglou for much of the campaign have been that he doesn’t consider the midfielder a part of his long-term plans, instead focusing on the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur.
That’s something Hjulmand cannot understand, sending something of a snipe at Postecoglou and Tottenham for the way his player has been treated.
“I would have thought that Pierre-Emile Højbjerg would have played more,” he said.
“We have a lot of data on him and know he’s on. He will come home with lots of energy, explains the national coach.
“He was really good for us in the last meeting. And I’m not too worried about him because he’s in really good shape. Pierre is a skilled player who can play for any team. He is so good that he can play on most teams in the world.”
Ekstra Bladet take that as the manager sending a ‘suppository’ to Postecoglou, which sounds a little harsh.
