When the summer started, Chelsea had a list of players they wanted to get rid of, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was among them.

The striker, who had arrived from Barcelona just a year prior, had struggled to adapt to his return to the Premier League, and never managed to fully convince any of their three managers that season.

This is why an exit was sought during the last transfer window, with Chelsea eventually reportedly releasing the Gabon international from his contract so he could sign for Marseille in Ligue 1, and L’Equipe look at his start to the season with them on Monday.

The move looked like the ideal one for the 34-year-old, as he was moving to a team where a manager really wanted him with passionate fans, reminiscent of those at Borussia Dortmund, where Aubameyang really excelled.

However, the start to the new campaign has been a bit of a slog for the forward, who has yet to find the back of the net in Ligue 1 after five games, with the team as a whole struggling.

L’Equipe dedicate a column to the player’s form, and explain he is currently ‘at a loss’ in this team, firmly ‘lacking confidence’, much like those around him.

He has yet to be the leader many expected to be in Marcelino’s side, and has been ‘suffering’ more than anything else for the time being.

With Marseille scoring just seven goals in five games in the league, Aubameyang has yet to live up to the big expectations that came with his move from Chelsea, leaving many wondering whether he will ever live up to the hype.
