West Ham United’s Nayef Aguerd has starred for Real Sociedad since joining them on loan last summer.
The Spanish club didn’t negotiate a purchase clause with the Hammers and the defender has to return to London after this season.
Last month, we covered claims from Spain that West Ham can take advantage given how La Real have come to count on the player.
Estadio Deportivo now cover Real Sociedad’s chances of retaining the centre-back beyond this season.
The Morocco international, who made 25 appearances, has become a ‘fundamental pillar’ for the La Liga side this season.
Real Sociedad would be ‘delighted’ to have Aguerd for next season but have to wait for West Ham’s decision.
He was sent out on loan when Tim Steidten was the technical director and Julen Lopetegui was the manager at the London club. The duo left the Hammers and Graham Potter was appointed as Lopetegui’s successor last month.
Recent claims in the UK stated Steidten felt it was a ‘mistake’ to let Aguerd leave but still decided to sanction a loan move because Lopetegui didn’t want the player.
Estadio claim Lopetegui’s entourage have denied this and insist the manager wanted him to stay at West Ham. This won’t matter to Real Sociedad or Aguerd now.
Graham Potter and Steidten’s successor [yet to be appointed] have to make a decision on Aguerd, who has a contract at West Ham until 2027.
Real Sociedad have to wait for Potter and the new West Ham management’s verdict on the Moroccan.
