Liverpool are ‘willing to pay’ the €40m required to sign Gabriel Veiga from Celta Vigo as they join the race for the highly-rated Spanish midfielder.
That’s according to AS, who say the Reds are one of several sides ready to make their move for the youngster.
Veiga has emerged as one of the rising stars of European football this season with a series of impressive performances for Celta in La Liga.
That’s not gone unnoticed, and the club are preparing to lose him in the summer, with their president openly admitting this week that he expects a transfer to happen.
AS now say that Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle were the first to look at the player, but Manchester City and Liverpool have also ‘recently joined’ the queue.
There is also interest inside Spain, where Atletico Madrid have sounded out the player and made an approach. Real Madrid are yet to do that despite reports saying otherwise.
Veiga is yet to decide what to do, and his future will be dependent on what agency he ends up joining, with most of the best agencies in the world currently vying for his signature.
Once that is decided the race for him is likely to pick up pace considerably, although for the moment he is simply focused on his football and helping Celta.
The club would like an agreement that sees him sold for a club record fee and then loaned back for a year, but they are aware that is a difficult deal to sell to any prospective buyers.
That would certainly be the case with Liverpool, where it is easy to assume that they would want Veiga immediately given their problems in midfield this season and the desire for radical change in that department moving forwards.
