Sunderland have received encouragement to keep Lutsharel Geertruida as Liverpool are no longer keen.
The Netherlands international joined Sunderland on loan from RB Leipzig in September 2025. Liverpool considered trying to take him away in the winter market.
Conor Bradley suffered a serious blow in January and is still on the sidelines. Towards the end of the last window, Jeremie Frimpong picked up an injury, forcing the Reds to react.
The Anfield club looked at a few right-backs including the Sunderland man and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, but finished that window without a new right-back.
Liverpool had looked at the Dutch duo in January when Arne Slot was in charge.
Liverpool’s stance favours Sunderland
Feyenoord were an option for Lutsharel Geertruida this summer. On Tuesday, Sport Witness relayed news this is no longer the case after the Eredivisie side parted ways with Robin van Persie.
Sunderland have received double boost as a move to Liverpool is no longer on the cards. That’s according to Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share an update.
The 25-year-old ‘currently has no contact whatsoever’ with Liverpool. Arne Slot was keen on signing the Sunderland loanee in January. At that time, he had agreed personal terms with the Anfield club.
On May 30th, the Reds showed the exit door to Slot, and recently appointed Andoni Iraola as his successor. The managerial changes mean the Merseyside club are no longer keen on the Dutch defender.
In another post on X, Blaauwhof claims Régis Le Bris’ side still want to have the right-back, for the long term. This would suggest the Black Cats are looking to sign him on a permanent transfer instead of a fresh loan deal.
Sunderland have to wait as Geertruida is focusing on the World Cup and any potential move will come later.
