Liverpool’s interest in Sporting fullback Nuno Mendes is back being highlighted by the media today.

Journalist Bruno Andrade brings an interesting piece on Goal explaining the player’s curious story from the time he was chased by a Sporting scout in the streets of Lisbon.

Mendes was then recruited by the Lions’ academy, and since his debut last year, a potential transfer to the Premier League has been pushed by several reports. This time, it’s claimed that the Reds are the club making a serious pursuit for the signing.

Liverpool reportedly had a €25m bid for the player rejected, and according to the journalist, they remain ‘strongly interested’ in the signing.

However, the Anfield side aren’t alone in the race, since the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid have both been interested in Mendes as well.

The story claims that Sporting believe they can get at least €40m from a transfer, presumably next summer. The youngster is protected by a release clause of €70m, so there’s a good margin of negotiation for them.
