Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has admitted they are in a transitional phase at this moment in time and is glad to be a part of a new look side moving forwards.
The defender has been speaking to Tubantia regarding his current situation after being named as Liverpool’s new captain earlier this year, a role he also enjoys with the Dutch national team.
It’s been a summer of major change at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp being forced to complete reinvent his side after the disappointment of last season.
The departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia and James Milner to Brighton meant a new midfield was needed, with signings such as Alexis MacAllister, Dominic Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch arriving to form a new look squad.
That, coupled with the signings from last season such as Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo means that this Liverpool side looks very different from the one that has been so successful in recent years.
How they fare compared to what came before remains to be seen and Van Dijk admits they are in a transition phase, although his part will stay the same.
“We are in a kind of transition phase with Liverpool,” he said.
“So of course, it’s nice to feel that the manager still considers me part of the new team, of Liverpool 2.0, so to speak. We spoke a lot in the first weeks of preparation. That showed confidence. Yes, certainly thanks to that captaincy.”
