Liverpool are set to make one last attempt to convince Martin Zubimendi into joining the club, but he’s looking likely to sign a new deal with Real Sociedad instead.

That’s according to El Diario Vasco, who report that Liverpool expect to be rejected by the player in the next few hours and be told he won’t be leaving Spain this summer.

The newspaper explains that Liverpool are willing to pay the midfielder’s €60m release clause, or even pay a little above that, but they’re still yet to convince the player on the move.

Instead, there is a growing confidence at Real Sociedad that he will sign a new deal and remain there this summer.

They’ve already offered him a new deal that would offer him a significant increase in his salary and put him among the top earners in the squad and likely see his release clause increased too.

Liverpool have offered everything they can to convince the footballer, offering him a contract that triples his salary and is superior to the one placed on the table by La Real.

Sources at the club were insisting the move would happen last week but there has been a concerted effort from Real Sociedad to turn Zubimendi around, with president Jokin Aperribay even suspending his holidays to meet the midfielder personally and propose a new contract.

Zubimendi has taken the weekend to think about the situation and now seems ready to reject the dizzying offer from Liverpool to stay where he is.
