Liverpool have paid Porto another €3m for the signing of forward Luis Diaz, thanks to additional clauses in the original deal to sign the Colombian being met.
That’s according to O Jogo, who say the Portuguese side have received the sum after various objectives were met by Liverpool and the player.
The newspaper explains that the €45m initially paid by the Reds already reached €47m in November but since then the amount has grown to €50m.
That’s because the forward has played 45 minutes in the required number of games and because Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League next season.
The payments for appearances has been coming in blocks of 25 games and Diaz has hit the next stage, initiating a payment to Porto, who can also benefit in future too.
There is also a pending payment worth €1m when Diaz hits the 30-goal mark for Liverpool in all competitions, with him currently sat on 24.
The newspaper details that Liverpool have to pay out €1m per 25 games with at least 45 minutes played, up to a total of €5m, €1m per 15 goals scored up to €5m and €1m for every Champions League qualification up to €5m. So far €3m has been paid out for the first set of bonuses and €1m each for the other two.
Whether he reaches either target, though, remains to be seen as he’s been consistently linked with a move away this summer, specifically to Barcelona.
That move would see Porto miss out on future payments, although we’re sure they negotiated a future sale clause in that deal with Liverpool to perhaps help mitigate that.
