In need of a new forward with Sadio Mané heading to Bayern Munich, Liverpool decided to spend big on Darwin Nuñez.
The striker had been on fire for Benfica, and even caused the Reds some problems in the Champions League, which is why Jürgen Klopp wanted him in his side going forward.
The Portuguese club weren’t ready to let him go for cheap, and eventually managed to haggle a potential €100m package from Liverpool.
The fee was broken up as €75m up front with €25m in bonuses, with the first of those potentially heading Benfica’s way very soon.
A Bola are the ones reporting this on Tuesday, claiming the money could be paid by Liverpool ‘as early as Wednesday’.
Why? Because the Reds will need to send this amount ‘as soon as the Uruguayan completes his 10th game’ at his new club, which is ‘very close to happening’.
So far, he has been used nine times, and, ‘if used by Jürgen Klopp in the match with Rangers’, Liverpool ‘will have to pay €5m’ to Benfica.
After that, the Liga Portugal side will get another €10m ‘when he reaches 60 games’, while the remaining €10m are ‘dependent on the individual performances of Darwin and Liverpool’, suggesting goals scored and likely Champions League related bonuses.
Since arriving at Anfield, the Uruguay international has scored three goals and provided an assist in his first nine games.
