Liverpool are ‘one step ahead’ of the competition for Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, which may now include his former club Bayern Munich.
That’s according to TuttoMercatoWeb, who say Bayern now ‘dream’ of hiring their former midfielder as he continues to lead Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen beat Bayern 3-0 in a top of the table clash this weekend, putting further pressure on Tuchel, who is now considered ‘very high risk’ as his side fail to keep up with the league leaders.
He narrowly secured the title last season after Borussia Dortmund’s late slip up and excuses were made that he hadn’t been at the club long after the disaster that was Julian Nagelsmann’s reign.
Now, though, the excuses don’t exist, and the pressure is growing on the German coach to prove himself worthy of the position or risk being sacked.
That would likely only happen in the summer but the prime candidate to replace him would be Alonso, who is well known in Bavaria after spending the end of his career there.
His name is on everyone’s lips at this moment in time thanks to Leverkusen’s impressive season, but Bayern would need to move quickly as Liverpool are ‘one step ahead’ of everyone as they seek Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.
The growing belief is that Alonso is the man they have chosen and TMW say they’ve already stepped ahead of the competition, particularly Bayern should they firmly enter the race.
It should be remembered, of course, that reports over the last few months have indicated that Alonso has a gentleman’s agreement with Leverkusen to negotiate an exit should any of his former clubs, Liverpool, Bayern and Real Madrid, want him.
At the moment it appears to be the first two showing firm interest and it remains to be seen if that agreement is honoured if the interest becomes concrete.
