The big Portugal related story for Liverpool at the moment is interest in Sporting manager Ruben Amorim. However, the Reds had an official in the country on Sunday for an unrelated matter.
In the past few months, there’s been several stories claiming Liverpool are interested in Porto midfielder Alan Varela.
Reports from Portugal, Argentina and even France claimed that the Reds are keen on signing the 22-year-old in the summer.
It turns out that, as newspaper Record today shares a story about the clubs who sent scouts for Porto’s match at the weekend, Liverpool get a mention.
There are no details about who the Reds were watching, but it’s made clear that they had a representative in the Dragons’ match against Vitória Guimarães.
Now in case Liverpool were really watching Varela, they may not have been impressed with what they saw this time. Record rated the midfielder 2 out of 5, writing he ‘took few risks’, while O Jogo gives him a 5 out of 10, claiming he ‘seemed lost’ at times.
Clubs like the Reds obviously scout many matches from players before making a decision on a potential transfer.
Varela has been having an excellent season, and this one match won’t kill Liverpool’s transfer planning in that regard. He’ll be one of multiple options being looked at for the summer window, and is likely to remain in that bracket.
