Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has spoken to Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg in the last few days about a move to Germany, but Brentford are leading the race.
That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who reports that does not mean a deal is close to being done for the Dutch defender and Bren
Plettenberg reports that Alonso has spoken to the Liverpool defender and personal terms between him and Leverkusen are not likely to be an issue.
The big issue is over his asking price. Liverpool are willing to sell for €20m plus €5m in add-ons, a figure that is too much for Leverkusen.
They are only considering signing the 22-year-old if another defender were to leave their squad before deadline day. That has left the door open for other interested parties to move.
Stuttgart had been pushing for him until Tuesday. He was their Plan A, but they are now considered out of the race. Brentford, meanwhile, are ‘100% there’.
They are willing to pay the €20m plus €5m and are now waiting for Van den Berg to make a decision about his future.
It seems he has a choice to make if he does want to leave Liverpool. He can wait for Leverkusen to sell and then move, or accept a move to Brentford, who are ready and waiting for him.
