Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has insisted he doesn’t regret his decision to leave Ajax at a young age, particularly now he’s shining at Anfield.

The Dutchman has been speaking to Ajax TV, relayed by Ajax Show Time, about his career as he returned to his former club this week to open his own Cruyff Court.

The Cruyff Foundation regularly open Cruyff Courts to enable children to practice all different kinds of sports but mostly football. These are often named after various sporting people and the Liverpool man is the latest to be honoured.

He spent the formative years of his career at Ajax, rising through the youth ranks to the first team, where he made 103 appearances in total and won three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch cups.

He left to join Bayern Munich in an €18.5m deal in July 2022 but would only spend a year at the German club, failing to make his mark despite his glowing performances at Ajax.

A move to Liverpool for €40m followed last summer and after a slow first season at Anfield in which he failed to convince Jurgen Klopp, he’s now one of the star men under the German’s successor Arne Slot.

His career is firmly on track and that means he can deny any suggestions he left Ajax too soon, which had been a topic of discussion as he struggled at Bayern and even Liverpool.

“I’m fine. I’m in a good flow. This season I am making many more minutes. The confidence that was lost a little bit is back. That pays off,” he said.

“When I still played at Ajax, I played everything. I went abroad early and didn’t play very much.

“Then you also see the other side, the mental part when you don’t play. That helped a lot. I don’t regret it the choice I made.”
