Schalke youngster Malick Thiaw has admitted he was happy to see himself linked with a move to Liverpool.

The young defender has regularly been linked with a move to Anfield over the last year, with it believed the Reds have identified him as a long-term replacement for Joel Matip.

Ultimately no move happened in the summer, and it appeared that was the end of the rumour after he signed a new deal at the club.

However, the links have since reemerged, with a recent report in SportBILD claiming that ‘Liverpool maintain regular contacts’ with the youngster via their scouts.

They’ve now been given encouragement to make the move happen, with the player commenting on the rumours.

“Of course you’re happy when big clubs are after you, but it was actually clear to me that I would stay at Schalke,” he told Schalke TV, relayed by Sport.de.

Now, while that’s not a ‘come and get me’ plea by any means it’s a clear indication that Thiaw would be happy with a move to Liverpool.

The Reds, of course, desperately need a new centre back with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk both out injured for the foreseeable future.

That is something they may look to address in January, and if they do, it seems Thiaw is likely to be on the list.

Whether he is the man to solve that issue is debatable – he probably isn’t given his age and lack of experience – but if they do make a move, it seems they’ll find a player more than happy for it to happen.
