Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina’s stay at Stadio San Paolo will come to an end at the end of this season and he is all set to leave the club as a free agent, but there’s been a twist.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the 35-year-old has decided to leave Napoli following the ongoing campaign. Last winter, he received an offer from another Italian club, AC Milan.
Reina couldn’t refuse the Rossoneri’s offer and agreed to join them for next season. The former Liverpool goalkeeper had set his sights on making an announcement after the end of this term.
Reina has been in fine form for Napoli this season, which has seen the 35-year-old attract interest from several clubs. Marca now reports his former club Liverpool have made an approach to the player and expressed their desire in re-signing him, which led to some thinking for the Spanish international.
The former Barcelona man spent nine seasons with Liverpool, during which time he went out on loan to Napoli for one season. Jurgen Klopp’s side have made an effort to sign the stopper, but’s already agreed to join Milan.
Marca say that despite Liverpool always being a consideration for the player, there’s ‘no loophole’ in Reina’s Milan agreement.
