It appears that, somehow, Lyon have managed to make a profit on Xherdan Shaqiri by selling him to Chicago Fire for €7m.

The Switzerland International arrived from Liverpool in the summer in a €6m + €5m in bonuses deal, and it appears the Reds are going to miss out on the latter part of those funds.

While the details of the bonuses were never disclosed, the fact the forward played fewer than 1000 minutes for the Ligue 1 side over 16 appearances in all competitions, while scoring two goals and assisting another three, suggests none of them will have been triggered.

That will be a blow to the Reds, who certainly won’t have expected their former player to spend just over six months at Lyon before moving on.

The fact they agreed to close to 50% of the fee to be paid in bonuses means they believed this would be a successful transfer for the player, who never managed to fit into Peter Bosz’s plans.

Now, Lyon get to make a profit thanks to an MLS club wanting a star player, while Liverpool will look on and wonder if they wouldn’t have been better off trying to get more money up front.
