Liverpool have now joined the battle for the signing of Benfica star João Neves, according to the latest reports from Portugal.
Newspaper O Jogo is the one featuring a story claiming that there are a few new ‘sharks’ in that race, and the Reds are one of them.
It’s said that Liverpool ‘identified the need’ to reinforce their midfield for the next season, and are now very ‘attentive’ to Neves.
The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United had already been chasing the player, but they are now being joined by Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain and the Anfield side.
João Neves is protected by a €120m release clause, but the interest in him has been so big that Benfica’s hope is to get that raised to €150m.
There have been no advancements on those negotiations with his agent Jorge Mendes so far, though.
O Jogo makes it clear that there have been no moves from the interested sides either, so we’ll see who’ll try first.
Even though Liverpool seem to have arrived after their Premier League rivals, there’s still time to win this race for the Reds, who may also want to please their new manager with a big transfer this summer.
