Liverpool’s interest in signing Benfica left-back Álvaro Carreras ‘is real’ and could force Manchester United to bring him back to Old Trafford.
That’s according to Correio da Manhã, who say Ruben Amorim wants to get ahead of the competition and bring the player back to Manchester United.
The newspaper states that using a repurchase clause in Carreras’ current contract with Benfica could be one the first thins that Amorim does in the January transfer window.
Reports in England have stated that several Premier League clubs are interested in the 21-year-old, with Liverpool and Manchester United out in front.
According to Correio da Manhã, the interest from the former ‘is real’ and that could act as a catalyst for Amorim to hasten Manchester United into bringing him back.
They have an option to buy him for €20m after selling in the summer and that price can be considered something of a bargain given Benfica put a €50m release clause in his contract when they signed him. That’s the figure they’d expect Liverpool and others to pay.
Carreras’ characteristics are seen as fitting perfectly with Amorim’ style and he would help to solve the left-back problem which has plagued United for years. The fact the 21-year-old has ‘potential that is impressing Europe’ is also a major bonus.
It’s up to United to spend the money to bring him back, but Liverpool’s growing interest in him seems to be pushing them to do just that.
