Liverpool aren’t just in the market for a midfielder at the moment, although that chase is understandably getting all headlines given how dramatic it’s been.
Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink, who works for Eindhovens Dagblad, reports the Reds have initiated contact regarding signing Johan Bakayoko.
The 20-year-old was born in Belgium and moved to PSV Eindhoven’s youth system in 2019, he progressed through their ranks and had a breakthrough season with the first team during the last campaign.
Playing mainly on the right wing, he clocked up 23 appearances, scoring five goals and adding five assists. A chunk of those appearances were as a substitute and his minutes in the league totalled at 1377.
Earlier this year, he extended his contract until June 2026, meaning PSV aren’t under a great deal of pressure.
Elfrink reports Liverpool have contacted the player’s entourage to find out the ‘financial conditions’ of a transfer, likely asking them if they know how much PSV will demand.
Burnley had also been interested but it’s thought they’re now out of the picture.
Some Dutch reports have suggested Bakayoko could even be a replacement for Mohamed Salah, although that would take a big turn of events at this stage of the transfer window and it’s likelier Liverpool would be looking to nurture his talent rather than throw him straight in.
