Liverpool and Aston Villa are in the picture to sign Athletic Club Bilbao’s Nico Williams.
Operating on both wings, he’s scored seven goals and registered six assists from 31 games in all competitions this season. His form for the La Liga side helped him make his debut for Spain last September and also represent them at the World Cup.
This has seen the 20-year-old attract attention from Liverpool and Aston Villa. That’s according to AS, who state the two English clubs have ‘already tested’ the ground to acquire his signature.
The Spain international has a contract until 2024 and it has a €50m release clause. His club have a desire to extend the deal.
This, coupled with his projection with La Roja ‘makes long negotiations’ with the Basque club. It’s also not made easy with Liverpool and Aston Villa hovering in the background.
If Williams doesn’t sign an extension, it needs to be seen if Athletic will continue to demand €50m in the summer or lower the request to cash in from his sale, to avoid losing the player for free in 2024.
With Liverpool and Aston Villa already testing the ground to sign Williams, they are likely to monitor his situation closely in the coming weeks and months.
