Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is a target for Liverpool as they desperately seek a new centre back before the end of the transfer window.

That’s according to Sky Sport Germany, who say the German defender is a candidate that the Reds are looking at.

Centre back has been a major issue for Liverpool this season, with long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez causing major issues.

The issue has been further compounded by Joel Matip’s ongoing injury issues, with him struggling to maintain his fitness and then picking up an ankle injury against Tottenham earlier this week.

That has left Liverpool without any senior centre backs, and it’s now felt finding one before Monday’s deadline has been a necessity.

Any signing will be a short-term solution at best, and Sky Sports Germany say Mustafi is one of the options being looked at.

He’s out of favour at Arsenal and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, has been linked with a move away this month.

He will be leaving the Emirates on a free in the summer and according to Sky’s information would be available at a ‘very cheap’ price in this window, with them speculating a ‘very low, single-digit million sum’.

Mustafi is open to a move, but as yet there has been no contact between his entourage and Liverpool about a potential switch.

There is a link with Jurgen Klopp though, with Sky explaining the Liverpool boss wanted to sign the Arsenal defender for Dortmund 12 years ago, but he eventually headed to Everton.

Despite that, the relationship between the two Germans is there, and it’s hinted that is something that could end up as a deciding factor.
