Jörg Schmadtke’s appointment as sports director at Liverpool is ‘imminent’, with the Reds planning an announcement this week.

That’s according to Sky Sports Germany, who say the German will not only be responsible for the German market as has been suggested.

They report that ‘nothing can go wrong’ on Schmadtke’s move to Anfield, with Liverpool hoping to make the move official in the coming week.

That’s because they want the German in place as soon as possible ahead of a summer in which they are facing an extensive squad change following a difficult campaign.

Schmadtke is likely to work closely with Jurgen Klopp on rebuilding the squad so they can compete for Champions League football or more next season but suggestions he will only focus on the German market are wide of the mark according to their information.

He will instead have a fuller remit for this transfer window, and there is a plan for both sides to ‘take stock’ after three months of work.

If the cooperation has proven to be a success as far as both sides are concerned, then Liverpool intend to turn the commitment into a season long one instead.
