There has been a lot of talk in Italy about the way Romelu Lukaku handled a potential exit from Chelsea by talking to Juventus and AC Milan behind Inter Milan’s back.
This led the Nerazzurri to move away from a potential deal for the Belgian forward and explore other avenues, such as the one for Folarin Balogun.
In turn, Lukaku has been left in limbo at Cobham, as he was not taken by Chelsea on their pre-season tour, and many in Italy are commenting on his behaviour, among which we can find Inter legend Marco Materazzi, who was interviewed by Gazzetta dello Sport.
The newspaper didn’t really waste much time in the interview before talking about the Belgium international, and they asked the World Cup 2006 winner of his thoughts on the player’s exit from Inter.
He replied: “Everyone is responsible for their own actions. Those who know things know that Inter have done everything three times with Lukaku. The first, when they wanted him by taking him from United. The second, welcoming him back after the year with Chelsea, and the third, showing him that they want to buy him back.
“I’ve always been a great fan of Lukaku, I just want him to clarify. He should be like Onana, a gentleman, earning respect. I would like Lucky to say what he feels with an open heart. So many misunderstandings would be avoided. I know how much he cared about Inter, but I also know how much Inter cared about him.”
Materazzi then urged the Chelsea striker to publicly address the situation, as ‘talking would be the right thing to do’.
He recalls how Inter brought him back after his failed return to Stamford Bridge and welcomed him as a ‘prodigal son’, which means they didn’t deserve the treatment they received from him this summer.
In fact, he adds: “Now, going away like this is like a stab wound.”
