In the January transfer window, Sport Witness tracked Edoardo Bove’s move to Watford very closely, as the London club signed him on a free transfer.

This came after what has been a rather torturous last few months for the midfielder.

He suffered a cardiac arrest back in December 2024 during a loan spell at Fiorentina. Bove then had a defibrillator inserted, ending his possibility of playing in Italy.

His Roma contract was terminated to allow the transfer to Watford to happen.

After some weeks of wait, Bove made his debut against Preston at the weekend. Praise for the 23-year-old has arrived from Pozzo family group sporting director Gianluca Nani.

Bove in excellent physical condition

The Italian spoke to Radio FirenzeViola about Bove’s Watford debut. He expressed surprise at how the ex-Roma is doing from a physical perspective.

Nani said – relayed by LabaroViola:  “It wasn’t an easy year for him, but when he arrived at Watford, he was in great shape. He surprised us with his physical and athletic performance and it seemed like he’d never stopped.”

The director also went on to explain that Bove was initially nervous but the debut ended with the entire stadium applauding him.

“He was a bit nervous the week before his debut, which is understandable. At the end of the match, he was excited and grateful for the opportunity. The stadium applauded him.”

Bove can become important for Watford

If the midfielder is really thriving physically, he can become a key player for the Hornets soon.

There is enough evidence to suggest that he could be their most important player too. At Roma, Bove played quite a bit in the Europa League and thrived under Jose Mourinho.

At Fiorentina, he played further forward in an attacking midfield spot. He scored once and assisting four times, featuring three times in the Conference League. On the pitch, his workrate has always managed to stand out.

If Watford get a player of that quality, they can expect Bove to become a leader on the pitch.
