Former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has criticised the club for their handling of matters with Mauricio Pochettino, labelling them a crazy club run like a business and not a team.
The former Blues boss has been speaking to Rondo, relayed by Voetbal 4 U, about the situation at his former club after their surprise move with Pochettino last week.
The Argentine boss left his job as Chelsea manager after just a year following an agreement with those in charge at Stamford Bridge that it was best if they part ways.
He had faced criticism and pressure for much of this season after something of a difficult campaign in which he’d failed to properly turn their fortunes around.
A strong end to the season saw Chelsea finish in sixth place in the league, though, and put in a number of impressive performances in a winning run that seemed to hint at a bright future under Pochettino’s management.
Instead, the two parties decided to mutually terminate his deal, with Chelsea now seemingly pushing to hire Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca as his replacement.
The whole affair has left Gullit shocked by what’s gone on, believing the club may be losing their soul as they’re being run as a business and nothing more.
“If you don’t perform at Chelsea, you are immediately out. That is still the case,” he said.
“That was already the case in my time under Ken Bates. I still think it is a very strange club, it also happened to Carlo Ancelotti. Pochettino was in a difficult position, he knew that.
“And he actually managed to squeeze out a reasonable performance, although it was not great.
“During my period I still had the feeling: this is a football club. There was another thought behind it, with Roman Abramovich. But if you look now: you can’t really identify with that, can you? It seems like a business model; it’s just making money.”
