Fresh from their recent change of owner, Marseille have started looking for people who can help rebuild the club into the powerhouse it once was.

On Thursday, Rudi Garcia, former Lille and Roma manager, was announced by the French press as the first manager of the Frank McCourt era, and, with that done, the director of football position is next.

Top of the list was former Monaco sporting director Luis Campos, and negotiations were underway, but things turned sour on Wednesday when it appeared he was snatched from under their noses by Lille.

Moving onto the next target, the club are, according to L’Equipe, now looking at former Liverpool and Tottenham director of football Damien Comolli.

The French director of football enjoyed mixed success with his signings at both clubs, although one could say the signings of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Dimitar Berbatov for Tottenham were more successful than the likes of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and José Enrique for Liverpool.

Of course, Comolli was also behind the signing of Jordan Henderson, Liverpool’s current captain, and Luis Suarez, but his track record on Merseyside did leave a lot to be desired.

Appointed to try and turn things around at Anfield, Marseille will be looking for Comolli to do the same in France, but perhaps a bit more successfully.
