Aston Villa star Jordan Veretout is expected to leave the Championship side this summer.

The French midfielder has been linked to several Ligue clubs, including his former club Nantes, Marseille and AS Saint-Étienne.

The 23-year-old has made it quite clear he doesn’t want to play for the Championship club any longer, but has failed to seal a transfer to France so far.

According to L’Equipe on Sunday, Saint-Étienne are still interested in signing Veretout, and the transfer isn’t off yet.

The rumours linking Veretout to Saint-Étienne has been a bit of a mess. Earlier, it appeared Christophe Galtier had confirmed the club were interested in signing the Aston Villa midfielder, before distancing himself from the situation.

Veretout signed for Aston Villa in a £8.5m deal, and has another four years left on his contract.

Ligue 1 clubs face a problem matching the player’s salary, and though he’s highly rated, Veretout hasn’t shown enough to justify a French side breaking the bank.
