When you think AC Milan and strikers, a few names come to mind, but the two prominent ones in the past couple of decades have to be Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi.
The pair of strikers, who played together during two separate spells at the club, combined 301 goals in 622 appearances for the Serie A club, and both made a name for themselves as two of the more lethal goalscorers in Europe at the time.
With the Champions League starting again on Tuesday night, France Football interviewed Super Pippo, who is currently the manager of Venezia in Lega Pro, Italy’s third tier.
The player was asked about the European competition, which he won twice with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007, and who he would fear facing defender wise as a player.
He answered: “The defending level was very high. I remember the duels with Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, without forgetting Gabriel Heinze. There was also Jamie Carragher from Liverpool, who was a handful”.
AC Milan faced the great United centre-backs twice in 2007 and 2010, coming out victorious of the first meeting on their way to win the trophy.
As for Jamie Carragher, everyone remembers the 2005 final (Inzaghi didn’t play), but if you ask the 2006 World Cup winner, he’ll probably prefer to talk about their second meeting in 2007, the year Milan got their revenge with a 2-1 win.
Who scored both goals in that final for the Italian side? You guessed it: Filippo Inzaghi.
