Pontus Jansson has revealed he’s been impressed with Championship rivals Newcastle United and Sheffield Wednesday this season. All three clubs have a chance to return to the Premier League, with Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United having the best chance of achieving this.

Speaking to the Swedish media, the Leeds United defender was asked which teams had caught his attention in this campaign. The Swede said leaders Newcastle United have been good, and have shown they are one of the top clubs in the Championship. Jansson highlighted that Newcastle United have been able to keep players from last season, which has been beneficial for the club.

Jansson also thinks Sheffield Wednesday have been playing decent football under Carlos Carvalhal and, like Leeds United, they have a chance of getting promotion via the play-offs. The Sweden international believes Sheffield Wednesday have invested well into their squad, which has paid off for them.

“When we faced Newcastle United they were really good, and they had kicked off after having a few problems. They’re one of the teams with the highest potential. They play nice football, they have good players, and they have much the same team they had in the Premier League last year. If I have to pick one more team that has impressed me I think Sheffield Wednesday have a high potential. They’re also in the play-off (places), just behind us on the table. They’re playing nice football, but they’re a club who have invested,” said the Leeds United star.

The current play-off positions are dominated by Yorkshire clubs with Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town all competing for one of the four spots. Newcastle United will be hoping they can get back to the Premier League by grabbing an automatic spot, and this was boosted by their victory over promotion rivals Brighton on Tuesday night.

Newcastle United have been fired to the top of the Championship table by Dwight Gayle, and Leeds United have their own prolific goalscorer in Chris Wood. Carvalhal will be hoping that Sam Winnall will be able to recapture his Barnsley form and do the same for Sheffield Wednesday
