Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion are in the picture to sign FC St. Pauli’s Eric Smith in the summer window, according to a report from Sweden.
The centre-back initially joined the German club on loan from KAA Gent in January 2021 and his stay there was made permanent later that year.
Smith has been a regular for St. Pauli, and he contributed eight goals [two goals and six assists] from 30 games in the recently concluded season.
Leeds and West Brom are showing interest in the 27-year-old, according to Aftonbladet, relayed by Fotbollskanalen.
It’s claimed the two English clubs are ‘prepared to buy’ the Swede in the next window. The report makes no mention of the fee the Whites or the Baggies could offer for the defender.
The player has a year left on his current deal, with an option to extend it for another year. St. Pauli have secured promotion to the Bundesliga, and they are ‘reluctant to release’ him. This would make it difficult for Leeds and West Brom to secure his services.
As well as the Championship duo, 1. FSV Mainz 05 and VfB Stuttgart are reported to be interested in Smith.
