Leeds United are said to be a ‘surprise suitor’ for striker Michy Batshuayi this summer, although their name may be bring used as part of contract renewal game playing.
Star cover the player today and explain that Leeds have emerged as a ‘surprise suitor’ for the striker should he leave Fenerbahce in the summer.
They explain that at this point it looks like being a goodbye for the striker, who joined the club from Chelsea in a €3.5m deal back in September 2022.
Since then he’s managed 41 goals and five assists in 68 games for the club and is well liked but his contract ends this summer and, despite reports the Turkish side have an option to extend by another year, the Turkish press seem to think differently.
They instead say that Fenerbahce are preparing a new contract for the Belgian but the likelihood is he’ll be on his way and Leeds are ‘closely following’ his situation.
They’re very much seen as a ‘surprise suitor’ for the striker as they plan for next season and potentially bolstering Daniel Farke’s squad for life back in the Premier League.
In truth, though, it all feels a little staged and the reality may be that Leeds have found themselves name dropped by a wily agent to stir up panic at Fenerbahce and potentially force them into offering better renewal terms.
Given Star say the potential exit has ‘destroyed’ the Turkish side, and that’s a line we’ve seen already in other reports, then it’s not hard to believe.
Of course that may just be the cynic in us but we’d take these reports with a pinch of salt for now, particularly with those contract talks going on in the background.
