Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald has refused to condemn his former manager Alexander Nouri. The Werder Bremen coach has been accused in the German media of forcing Wiedwald out of the Bundesliga club.

Speaking to Weser Kurier, Wiedwald was asked whether the decision to sign for Leeds United was due to his relationship with Nouri.

“I don’t want to say anything. For me the change to Leeds United was not a step down, Despite being in the second tier it’s the right step. I wish all the best to Werder.”

Wiedwald joined Leeds United last month, signing a three year contract for an undisclosed fee. On leaving the German side the 27 year old thanked most of those involved at Werder Bremen, apart from Nouri.

Leeds United’s new goalkeeper decided his time in Bremen was up when he learned Jiří Pavlenka would be brought to become the club’s No.1 goalkeeper.

Despite Wiedwald being first choice at Werder Bremen last season, Nouri took the decision to sign the Czech international, which has brought criticism in Germany.

On Leeds as a place, Wiedwald certainly sounds positive: “It’s nice. I’ve travelled a lot in the car. There are much more green areas than you would imagine in a former industrial city.”
