On Monday, Leeds United announced Diogo Monteiro has completed a permanent move to FC Arouca.
The 20-year-old arrival in Portugal has been discussed by the local newspapers, including Tuesday’s edition of Record. Leeds haven’t mentioned the details of the agreement and neither have the Primeira Liga side.
According to the report, the centre-back has signed a contract until 2028, with a €10m release clause.
Record haven’t mentioned the fee Arouca have agreed to pay the Whites, if indeed there is one, but report it’s a deal with ‘equal share of his registration rights’ between the clubs.
That makes it sound like Leeds United are due 50% from a future transfer fee. It’s an unusual arrangement but not unheard of, and was how Marcus Edwards moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Vitória de Guimarães in 2019.
Leeds United signed Monteiro from Swiss side Servette FC in January 2023 and he’s left Elland Road without making an appearance for the first team.
Monteiro had minutes with Leeds U21s and played 40 games for them. The report states the youngster will be part of Arouca’s senior team immediately.
In short, Monteiro’s move to Arouca will help him play first team football and Leeds can benefit from his future sale.
