Lazio and Fiorentina are ‘in the running’ to sign Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto in the summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Whites invested around €6m to sign the 19-year-old from FC Zürich last summer and that has paid off.
He’s managed four goals and four assists this season. Gnonto’s displays have helped him improve his valuation and also entertained Leeds supporters.
It’s claimed the idea of the former Inter Milan academy player returning to Italy is ‘taking shape’, where Lazio and Fiorentina are ‘on pole’ to sign him.
Fiorentina were previously credited with interest and are still active in the chase for the Italy international.
Vincenzo Italiano’s side must watch out for Lazio, who could see Pedro leave them after this season. Therefore, Maurizio Sarri would need a new winger and the Leeds attacker has been identified as the target.
Gazzetta add the teenager, who had a spell in Switzerland, would be eligible to take the benefits of the Growth Decree, if he were to return to Italy in the summer. That means he’d pay a vastly reduced tax rate.
Leeds are in the fight to avoid relegation, 18th in the table, and two points behind 17th placed Everton.
Relegation will obviously mean multiple exits, and Gnonto, who has repeatedly expressed his happiness at Leeds United, would be one of the more painful ones.
