Valencia were showing an interest in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier and had been in contact about a move.
That’s according to Tribuna Deportiva. They report that Valencia remained active in the goalkeeper market until last weekend following Julen Agirrezabala’s injury.
That led them to explore various alternatives and one of the options they seriously considered was Leeds goalkeeper Meslier.
In fact, Marcos Abad, their goalkeeping coach, even contacted Meslier personally to convey the club’s interest. He made it clear to Meslier that he was the preferred candidate to fill the goalkeeper position should Stole Dimitrievski leave the club in the January transfer window.
The deal with Leeds would have involved a transfer fee, something Valencia had tried to explore during the previous summer transfer window. That was ultimately put on hold as Meslier changed agents.
Meslier has since barely featured for Leeds this season so a transfer would have been ideal. But it’s now been put on hold. Agirrezabala’s injury has given Dimitrievski the chance to prove himself and he’s no longer keen to leave the Mestalla. That means any move for Meslier has now been abandoned for the time being.
