Leeds United defender Maximilian Wöber is putting up a fight against those who’ve criticised him in the past few hours.
The centre-back is being blamed by some for Austria’s defeat to France, as he scored an own goal which ended up being decisive in the 1-0 loss.
Wöber did not hide from his responsibility, and today, the Leeds player faced the local media in a press conference. In quotes brought by Kurier, he had a lot to say about the criticism and his desire to speak to the media..
“After a game like that, where you’re the nation’s idiot, it’s not a bad thing to stand up and do your part so that the whole thing is over and I can concentrate fully on the Euros again,” said the Leeds player in a press conference.
“The whole team and the coaching staff, family and friends have put me back on the right track, so that I’m positive again and can still record it as a proud moment in my career to have played for Austria at the Euros and sung the national anthem shoulder to shoulder with my friends. It’s still a moment I’ll never forget. That’s exactly what I’ll take with me now, I’ll forget the rest.”
Wöber was one of the many players who left Leeds following their relegation to the Championship last summer. He was loaned to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he made 28 appearances this season.
Now at the Austrian national team, there’s the need for a quick recovery following that defeat in the first round. They won’t have an easy task, though, as their upcoming games in the group stage will be against Poland and the Netherlands.
Wöber is getting prepared for that, and Leeds United will hope for some good performances to help his value this summer.
