Ao Tanaka left Fortuna Düsseldorf for Leeds United in August 2024 and was a regular in his debut season at Elland Road.
The Japan international played over 3,700 minutes from 49 games last season. He was an integral part of the Whites’ squad that secured promotion to the top flight.
Daniel Farke started him in two Premier League games this season before he suffered an injury in August. Tanaka then missed Leeds’ league matches against Newcastle United and Fulham.
The midfielder has played 33 minutes since August 23rd, and he isn’t pleased with the limited role.
Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu has included him in the squad for October’s fixtures. The 27-year-old has been speaking to the media in his country and Goal in Japan have relayed his comments.
The player explained his frustration over his reduced role at Leeds United. He’s confident of turning things around when Farke provides him opportunities again.
“Of course, as a basic premise, it’s frustrating not to be playing in matches,” he said.
“But that’s how the Premier League is, and no matter which team you look at, not just mine, even the players on the bench or those not playing in matches possess overwhelming quality.”
“It’s only seven games so far, and I still have many challenges, but I also have a sense that I can do it. I think I just need to perform when I get the chance.”
Goal, after relaying his quotes, insist he hasn’t lost confidence.
The midfielder also talked about his injury situation and his delight at playing in the Premier League.
“There were mentally tough moments during that period,” Tanaka explained.
“I just need to do what I have to do, and the fact that I can play in the Premier League excites me for every single match.”
After this international break, Leeds United face Burnley in the Premier League. Tanaka will be hoping for some minutes.
