Former Leeds United forward Joe Jordan has defended Manchester United for setting a new transfer record after sealing a deal for Paul Pogba this week. Manchester United paid over €100m for the midfielder despite the player leaving the club four years ago for a pittance of training compensation, to join Juventus.
Speaking to TMW, the ex AC Milan and Verona striker was asked about his thoughts on Pogba returning to Old Trafford for that amount of money. The Leeds United legend said in today’s game the transfer fee in no longer important as the market has changed in recent years.
Jordan believes getting Pogba will be important to Manchester United because Jose Mourinho made him one of his prime targets this summer, and that the fans shouldn’t worry about the France international settling in because he’s used to the environment, having already played there.
“The figure for me is not important, the transfer market has changed in recent years. This figure is expected to unbalance the equilibrium but for Manchester United he’s important. Mourinho wanted him and for the fans it’s important the player knows the environment, having grown up in the academy of the club,” said Jordan on Pogba’s arrival at his former club.
Manchester United will go into the season under a lot to pressure following the arrivals at the club this summer. The Premier League side have spent heavily bringing in the likes of Pogba, Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimović, meaning plenty will be expected of Mourinho’s men this season.
