Leeds United goalkeeper Marco Silvestri has spoken to the Italian media about the problems he had when he joined the Championship side in 2014. The 25-year-old has this season lost his place in the starting eleven, but was instrumental in Leeds United’s EFL Cup win over Norwich City last week.
Speaking to Gianluca di Marzio, Silvestri revealed he did have his difficulties during his first season in England. The stopper believes because he was an Italian there was more scrutiny on him due to owner Massimo Cellino being from the same country. Silverstri thinks the British media viewed it that Cellino favoured the Italian players, which didn’t make it easy.
“In the beginning here we had a little difficulty during the first year. There were many Italians and the president was Italian. So, the British thought we were the ‘godchildren’ of the president. It was not easy,” said Silvestri.
Silvestri has lost his place to Rob Green in this campaign after the England goalkeeper joined the club from QPR in the summer. However, the Italian gave manager Garry Monk a reminder last week when he was the hero during Leeds United’s win over Norwich City via a penalty shootout. Leeds United were rewarded with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool in the quarter finals, and Silvestri will be hoping he gets the nod to start again.
