Athletic Club Bilbao midfielder Ander Iturraspe continues to be linked to Leeds United by the Spanish press. As the player’s contract with his club expires in the summer, the fact he’s not signing an extension is creating many doubts about his future.
Outlet AS had already talked about the possibility in March, saying the Elland Road side would be an option, especially if they gained promotion to the Premier League.
There weren’t many details about negotiations at the time, and not much has changed since. It’s the very same AS who names Leeds United as a possibility today, but it doesn’t look like things have developed much.
The outlet brings a story on the player’s career at Athletic, saying he had been an important piece in the team at the time when Marcelo Bielsa was in charge.
Now even though Iturraspe is walking for free, they say there’s still time for him to show he’s a good player. AS state: ‘Leeds could be his destination’.
Bielsa’s appreciation of the player, and role in his career, is highlighted. It’s explained that the footballer has often been ‘misunderstood’, partly because he’s got an introverted personality.
The Argentine manager, however, ‘fell in love’ with Iturraspe and built a large part of his tactics at Athletic around him.
Iturraspe only has five appearances this season, which is obviously not great for a 30-year-old, but in case Bielsa wants to give him a chance to prove himself again, at least he can be signed for free.
