Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson has reflected on his bizarre own goal against Fulham, admitting that the moment was as painful as it was comical.

The incident happened in the closing minutes of the match at Craven Cottage. Fulham were pushing for a late equaliser when a corner delivery struck Gudmundsson’s head. It looped perfectly into the Leeds United net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

It was a cruel moment for a player who had been one of Leeds United’s most reliable performers in recent months.

Speaking to local outlet Aftonbladet during international duty, the 26-year-old laughed off the mishap but admitted it was hard to take at the time.

“It’s so hard to explain,” he said. “That the ball would go in that direction is something I can’t really understand. Of course, I was incredibly disappointed afterwards.”

The left-back revealed he leaned on family and teammates to get through the frustration, highlighting the mental side of professional football.

“It hurt at the time, of course. But the next day was a new day, and we played a great match the following weekend. That was a relief,” he explained.

Known for his calm personality, Gudmundsson showed maturity in how he handled the situation. He’s insisted such moments are part of the game. Now, he says he can look back and even laugh about it.

“I probably would never have scored like that in the attacking box. It was a bit comical, actually.”

He’s currently with the Sweden national team ahead of their friendly against Switzerland. The Leeds defender seems fully focused on moving forward, hoping his next header finds the right net.
