Leeds United are one of the clubs in the mix to sign Club Atlético Tigre’s Mateo Retegui, according to Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato, relayed by Area Napoli.
Former Napoli striker Roberto Sosa has revealed the 23-year-old is close to agreeing a deal with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Venerato backed up the aforementioned claim and then went on to explain other clubs that are chasing Retegui. That’s when Leeds get a mention.
According to the journalist, the Whites have joined Inter Milan and AC Milan in chasing the Argentine-born Italy international. That’s all he has to say about Javi Gracia’s side.
Venerato adds the Nerazzurri have held talks with the striker but don’t have the financial resources to carry out the operation.
“Yes, I can confirm that Eintracht Frankfurt is on Retegui’s trail also because Kolo Muani will leave. On the footballer, there are also Leeds and the two Milanese [clubs],” he said.
“Inter has come forward for the player, talking to both the player and the forward. There’s just one small problem: at the moment, the Nerazzurri management still don’t have the money to buy the striker. We’ll talk about that later.”
Inter’s position could give Leeds and other clubs an advantage in the transfer race to sign the player.
Retegui has been in the news, especially in the Italian media, ever since Roberto Mancini included him in the national team squad and allowed him to make debut for Italy last month.
He has been on loan at the Argentine club from Boca Juniors. Last week, Tigre president Ezequiel Melaraña told TyC Sports journalist César Luis Merlo that everything indicates the player will be sold in the summer. He’s scored seven goals from 10 matches this year.
With Leeds now reportedly in the picture, it’ll be interesting to see whether they can convince him to pick them over other clubs in the summer, although you would expect them staying up in the Premier League to be the minimum requirement for him to join.
