There was a time where Nicolas Tagliafico was a wanted man around Europe, with clubs such as Manchester City wanting to sign him.

However, that never materialised, and the Argentine has been at Ajax Amsterdam for some time now, joining them from Independiente in 2018.

His contract with the Dutch side expires next summer, meaning this year could be the best time to sell him, although it remains to be seen whether a move to the likes of Leicester City and Leeds United is what he’ll want.

We mention both the Foxes and the Elland Road side because they are named in a Soccer News article in the Netherlands about the left-back’s future.

The problem for Leicester and Leeds in all this is whether they are the kind of teams that ‘match Tagliafico’s ambitions’, despite the fact that big names such as Barcelona have moved on.

The website points out that ‘with the wisdom of today and taking into account that these clubs have also been interested in Tagliafico over the years’, moving to either Leicester or Leeds at the time ‘was perhaps the best path for him’.

Instead, he remained at Ajax, and him never moving ‘also shows why the biggest clubs in the world made different choices’.

Currently estimated at €12m, the defender has a choice to make now that Erik ten Hag is moving on: either he stays and earns himself a new contract at Ajax, or leaves this summer, perhaps lowering his standards and settling for a club like Leicester or Leeds instead of going for the top immediately.

However, at 29, it’s understandable that he’d want to move up quickly if he can.

It’s worth pointing out that Tagliafico made it clear last year, when Leeds were linked, that he’d love to move to a more challenging league.
