Leeds United’s interest in Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola seems to be one of reasons the coach is leaving the Spanish side this summer.
Some very interesting quotes on this situation are brought by Union Rayo, as club president Raul Martin Presa spoke to DAZN about it.
The Rayo Vallecano chief had no problem in revealing that Iraola wanted to leave the club as soon as Leeds made an approach for him, meaning that his decision to run down his contract will not be a surprise.
The Spanish side decided not to release him back then, and now he’s able to leave for free, although it seems unlikely that he will be wanting to take over at Elland Road in the Championship.
“Andoni told us when Leeds came and we did not want to sell him, and he did not want to pay the clause, that he was not going to renew. It was our obligation to try and we have tried by all possible means but it hasn’t been possible,” Raul Martin Presa told DAZN.
“Until Thursday that he communicates it to us again, we have not assessed any other situation other than that of his continuing. When Leeds came, he told us that he would not renew, but we were stubborn.”
Iraola is just one of the many managers who’ve been linked to the Leeds job. In fact, the rumours about him had been stronger before the Whites signed Sam Allardyce in their desperate attempt to escape from relegation.
As the Elland Road side prepare for their season in the Championship, the English press has been reporting the likes of Steven Gerrard, Carlos Corberan, Brendan Rodgers, Lee Bowyer and Michael Skubala as potential names for the job.
