Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has been receiving some appreciation in Portugal, following his team’s great campaign in the Euro qualifiers.
One of the stars of the squad has been Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who scored six goals and contributed seven assists in the ten games they played.
As newspaper A Bola features a very long interview with Martinez, the Red Devils’ player was a big subject in their discussion, and the subject of compliments from his national team boss.
“I think Bruno Fernandes had a spectacular qualifying campaign,” said Martinez.
“Bruno is a leader. He has a lot of leadership. But I think that respect between the players allows us to be happy on the pitch. We need five or six players who are leaders. I think that in relation to what the opposition is proposing, we can use Bruno, we can use Bernardo, in totally different situations. And that’s important for our tactical flexibility that we’re talking about. If we don’t have the players to be able to do that, it doesn’t make sense.”
Portugal won all of their ten games in the Euro qualifiers, scoring scored 36 goals and conceding two, so Martinez has reasons to be hailed by the local media so far.
Regarding Bruno Fernandes, there had been no doubt about his leadership since his time at Sporting and his arrival at Manchester United, where he’s been the club captain.
Featuring for the Red Devils this season, the midfielder continues to have a impact, with 7 goals and 5 assists in 29 appearances.
