Over the past few months, the future of Lazio’s Stefan De Vrij has been of great interest to the Italian media, with moves to Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan being touted for this summer’s transfer window.

Out of the three, José Mourinho’s side have been labelled as the favourites, especially when it comes to Il Messaggero, who basically claimed a deal was all but done to get him to Old Trafford next season.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday seem to think a new suitor has joined the mix in Everton, and that a move to Goodsion Park could be on the cards for the Dutch defender.

One of the reasons why this move could happen, and this is just us speculating, is that Ronald Koeman and Stefan De Vrij already know each other quite well.

The Everton manager was the Lazio defender’s for three years manager during his time at Feyenoord, and constantly pushed him to become better before both left the Dutch club in 2014 to further their careers.

That Koeman would turn to one of his former pupils to strengthen his team certainly wouldn’t be something new, having already done so when he brought in Jordy Clasie to Southampton in 2015.

Of course, there is always the chance De Vrij will be given the opportunity to be a starter with Manchester United, in which case, Everton might have to look elsewhere.

Yet, with their new backing and an ambitious project in the works, you never know.
