Four days ago, Calciomercato explained Liverpool have identified Teun Koopmeiners as a target to replace Georginio Wijnaldum, if the latter leaves Anfield.

The Reds midfielder has a contract expiring in the summer and the Merseyside club are hoping to tie him down to a new deal.

So far, there has been no progress in Liverpool’s effort to retain the 30-year-old beyond the ongoing campaign.

The Premier League side’s interest in the AZ Alkmaar is now backed up by AS. They state major European clubs are fighting to acquire the 23-year-old’s services and the Anfield club are also in the mix.

It’s claimed the English club are the latest side to join the race for the Dutchman as the ‘Klopp sees him as an ideal candidate’ to take Wijnaldum’s place in the squad.

Liverpool have joined AS Roma, Inter Milan, Napoli, Sevilla and a few other clubs to show interest in Koopmeiners.

He has a contract until 2023, but AS explain he is most likely to leave the Eredivisie side in the summer. AS explain the player is ‘more than ready’ to change clubs, who is estimated around €20m.

Koopmeiners can play in two out of three positions in Klopp’s system. Liverpool ‘have a need’ to replace Wijnaldum and the report suggest his compatriot could be his ‘ideal’ successor at the club.

The Netherlands international has 17 goals and seven assists in all competitions for AZ this season.
